10 principles for setting good goals for 2010

Came across a nice article on CNN.com that has some of the same goals I talked about in my post on setting goals earlier this year.  The article summarizes setting new year goals into 10 points:

Set smaller goals with smaller steps
Frame your goals positively
Look at the pros and cons
Get a resolutions buddy
Be specific
Know thyself
Examine deeper issues
Don’t be overanxious
Be flexible
Keep your eye on the ball

Setting Goals

“I’m going to study tonight”. This is a phrase I hear from my students all too often. I say too often because it is a horrible goal to have. Why? Studying of course is not bad, but it all comes in the way you state it. By having a goal in your mind that “I’m going to study tonight”, you have some kind of understanding of what that means, but it is very un-firm, which means that when you actually do get to studying, whether you study 15 mins, 2 hours, 5 hours, or 8 hours is left up to you, and, either way, you have succeeded in your goal.
