Participating In #EdChat

What is #EdChat?

EdChat is a chat created by educators for educators that takes place on Twitter using the hashtag #EdChat.  You can find out more about what exactly it is by watching the video below, and by visiting here. #Edchat takes place on Twitter Tuesdays from 11am-12pm and again from 6pm-7pm.

I am just starting out using EdChat, and so I had to figure out how to do it, and how to do it in the most productive and effective way.  I am still learning, but I thought I would put together this document for those like me who want …

A slick quick way for determining if a number is divisible by 7 (VIDEO)

I had never seen this before–came across a YouTube video explaining it, though the proof is trivial (he doesn’t do it in the video):

So here’s the rule.

Take any big number, say 439239619 (this is a multiple of 7 from how I generated it, but the trick will discover that…in fact, the only prime factors of this particular number are 7 and 13).

By having a goal in your mind that “I’m going to study tonight”, you have some kind of understanding of what that means, but it is very un-firm, which means that when you actually do get to studying, whether you study 15 mins, 2 hours, 5 hours, or 8 hours is left up to you, and, either way, you have succeeded in your goal. This is the problem: the goal is too unspecific. …

Twitter in the classroom

I recently got a Google Wave invite from a friend, and while playing around with it, came across some waves people had made that talk about using technology (like Google Wave) in the classroom.  In this thread was a youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WPVWDkF7U8) posted by someone that talked about a teacher using twitter to further class disucussion in a university class setting in the states.  Here is the video:

I thought “Hey, if it gets the students asking questions, then GREAT!”  So I’ve set it up…

…we’ll see how …
